Posted by Aron Trauring on August 07 2002 (Wednesday) : 12:27 AMIn this bitingly satirical article, Leonard Fein masterfully demolishes the tendency of the American Jewish community to rush to support the despicable, immoral behavior of the Sharon government. In the name of "supporting Israel," war crimes are whitewashed, criminal behavior is justified, and Jewish values are tread underfoot. But who needs Fein's parody, when the real thing is even better. Major General Amos Gilad, the coordinator of government activities in the territories, in newspeak to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday, said: "I say there is no hunger in the territories. Hunger is when there is a lack of basic commodities. Hunger is when people have swollen bellies and fall over dead. There is no hunger now." In case you missed it, I'll repeat it: "Hunger is when people have swollen bellies and fall over dead. There is no hunger now." But Gilad doesn't end there. No. There's more. Apparently forgetting for a moment that during operation "Defensive Shield" the Israeli Army completely destroyed the PA's civil institutions, Gilad takes the PA to task for not providing basic services to the well-fed Palestinians: "Turning to the rising influence of Hamas in the territories, Gilad said that the Islamic fundamentalist group is filling the vacuum in social services left by the disintegration of the Palestinian Authority. Charging that the PA is not taking responsibility for services such as education and welfare, he added that Hamas, which a year ago had the support of 10 percent of the population, now has the support of 20 percent." Gilad went on to say the PA is "extremely corrupt." Specifically he charged its leadership with "driving fancy cars, hiring maids from Sri Lanka, and," --get this -- "not bringing up its children to become suicide bombers." Yes, the PA leadership is extremely corrupt because, in Gilad's words, it is "not bringing up its children to become suicide bombers." No wonder Gilad could say with a straight face: "Sometimes I think we care about the Palestinians more than [PA Chairman] Yasser Arafat and his gang." After all, unlike the PA leadership (and just like the Hamas), the Israeli Army is doing all it can to ensure that Palestinian children grow up to be suicide bombers. < | >
